DEFENDING MX1 CHAMPION WATERS ON WONTHAGGI PODIUM
Husqvarna Racing Team’s defending Australian MX1 champion Todd Waters began his 2021 campaign with a solid podium result at the opening round of the 2021 ProMX Championship at Wonthaggi on Sunday, claiming third overall.

New father Waters posted the fourth-fastest time in ProMX qualifying as riders battled both the clock and torrential showers, before he rode to consistent 4-2 results in the two premier class races in Victoria.

A strong start in the opening race saw Waters sitting comfortably in third, before a small error saw him give up a position to eventual round winner Regan Duffy. From that point on, Waters struggled to find his rhythm and finished the race in a lonely fourth position.

In the second MX1 outing, Waters again enjoyed a strong start, finishing the first lap in fifth, before steadily chipping away at the racers in front of him, moving into second place at the halfway mark. From there he tried to close the gap to the lead, but ran out of time and settled for the runner-up position, scoring third on the day.

Waters’ consistent results in challenging conditions see him just four points off the championship lead as the 2021 ProMX Championship heads to Canberra for the second round on 2 May 2021.

Todd Waters: "It was an eventful day. I came prepared, but the lead-up was interesting as I have a two-week-old daughter and we drove down here in a motorhome with my family. As soon as the helmet goes on though, everything aside from racing falls away. In the opening race I got too excited, worked myself into third, but dropped it and then rode terribly and my technique went out the window. I regrouped after the race and came out with a better result in the second moto. I’m so happy to see Regan take his first victory and to have some young blood in the class, because it shows I have homework to do and it only spurs me along. When I won the championship in 2019 we left the opening round with a DNF, so this is a strong start and I’ve just got to keep putting it on the podium and enjoying it.”
